Building Mikey’s RC P-51 Mustang

I recently built Mikey’s RC P-51 Mustang. It’s a very easy to build plan. And the PDF plan can be downloaded for free from www.mikeysrc.com So here a a few pictures of the build.

The Mikey’s RC P-51 Mustang is a very easy to build plane. The PDF plan on consists out of three pieces. The wing, the fuselage and the elevator. The wing and the elevator will later be slid through the slits in the fuselage.

After the templates were aligned on the foam board I traced the outlines.

Trace the templates

Here you see the three pieces already cut out of the foam board. Notice slits in the fuselage through which the wing and the elevator will run later on. At this stage I already cut out the ailerons and elevator control surfaces. Next to this I also cut the leading edge of the wing to an angle. This should allow the air to flow over the wing more easily.

The three pieces

The next step would be to cut the elevator control surfaces in order to allow them to move. Therefore cut a 45 degree angle where the control surface touches the elevator wing. The cut needs to be performed on the bottom side. And you need to cut on both sides so that the full movement up and down is possible.

Cut the elevator control surface

After the bottom side of the elevator is cut, I applied some clear packing tape on the top side. The packing tape will serve as a hinge for the elevator control surface.

The same thins needs to be done for the ailerons. Also cut a 45 degree angle on the bottom at both sides where the ailerons and the main wing touch. You might also trim the length of the aileron one or two millimeter. This will allow the aileron to move more freely.

Cut the ailerons

On the top side of the wing apply some packing tape as hinge for the aileron.

And finally we’re ready to put all the pieces together. Slide the wing and the elevator through the slits of the fuselage. My motor is a bit heavier than the one suggested for this build. So I decided to move the motor mount a bit back. That’s why I cut out that piece on the nose of the plane.

Frame ready for the electronics

And that’s it! The plane is now ready to he hot-glued together. Also the barbecue screwers need to be glued to the wing and the fuselage in order to provide stiffness. And two screwer will be attached between the wing and the fuselage according to the plan.
