HK450 feathering shaft and blade grip assembly

In this post I would like to show you the correct assembly of the main blade grips on the feathering shaft. Therefore I took a picture of the things you will find inside each of the main blade grips of a HK 450 v2 and a HK 450 GT.

Read more below…

The upper one is the feathering shaft of a HK 450 GT.
Below is the assembly of a feathering shaft from a HK 450 v2.

HK 450 GT (metal blade grip and thrust bearing):

When reassembling the parts onto the feathering shaft start by pulling the silver combined-washer/spacer over the feathering shaft. Next is the bearing and then the metal blade grip. From the outside, push the bearing into the blade grip and over the feathering shaft followed by the thin washer. Re-assemble the thrust bearing and push it into the blade grip. Finally fix everything with the brass washer and the screw.
When reassembling the thrust bearing, note that the two outer parts (those with the circular notches in them) have a different inner diameter. The one with the larger inner diameter needs to go onto the feathering shaft first (towards the center of the rotor head). The other one with the smaller inner diameter needs to be put onto the feathering shaft at last before the brass washer and the screw.

HK 450 v2 (plastic blade grip and normal bearings):

The inside of the HK 450 v2 assembles exactly the same. Start by pulling the silver combined-washer/spacer over the feathering shaft. Next is the bearing and then the plastic blade grip. From the outside, push the bearing into the blade grip and over the feathering shaft followed by the thin washer and the second bearing. Note, that the first bearing has an inner diameter of 4mm, while the second bearing has an inner diameter of 3mm. Finally fix everything with the brass washer and the screw.

  1. Could you tell me what the 3 rd item from the left is please on the v2 assembly. My head flew apart because the factory fitted a 4mm bearing instead of a 3mm at the bolt end and have consequently lost a number of bits. Not sure what I need to replace.
    many thanks

    • Hi Paul!
You mean the bearing that goes into the inner side of the blade grip? It’s a normal bearing with an inner diameter of 4mm as it needs to fit onto the main part of the feathering shaft. It’s outer diameter is slightly smaller than that of the other bearings that go into the outside of the blade grip. I don’t have my heli at hand right now, but I would guess that the inner bearing has a diameter of about 6mm while the two bearings on the outside of the blade grip have a diameter of 8mm. Please note, that the two bearings on the outside of the blade grip have different inner diameter. One has an inner diameter of 4mm the other one has 3mm.

      • Hi.
Thanks for that description. It is really helpfull. I now know what is missing after it flew apart. Need spacers, bearing set for both grips and dampeners. They really need to sort out the quality control!!
        Many thanks

  2. Hi there. Just wanted to thank you for showing how this is put together. I have a HK450SE V2 and upgraded the blade grips to all metal and I was completely stumped as to how to put it all together since there were many more small parts in then metal kit vs the original plastic.

Thanks again and keep up the great work!

    Regards,
    David

  3. I sure wish someone had this example photo for the Blade 450 main blade grips. I think the parts explosion in the manual is wrong.

  4. Does anyone know what the acceptable main blad movement is? I have all assembled in the correct order but the blades move up and down a bit more than I think should be ok. I keep adding spacers but it does not seem to fix the problem.

    • Have you checked the blade tracking? When you spin up the rotor to about 50% throttle the blades should run at the same plane. That’s the important thing.
